This year has seen a number of highly talented; motivated and skilled group of debaters making the team selection a difficult; hotly contested and rigorous process. Nevertheless, the SA Academy Team for 2013 is:

Support Team SA members in Global Online Debates

Two members of the South African Schools Debating Team, Josh Broomberg and Daniel Peter (with support from their team mates) are participating in an exciting on-line debating tournament called the Global On-line Debating tournament. They have completed two rounds, with the third round under way.

The tournament consists of five preliminary rounds with a break to Octo-finals. It pits them against some top quality debaters from around the world. Please follow their progress through the tournament and importantly vote for who you think has won each debate (hopefully that will be Josh and Dan).

Call for Academy selectors

Dear all,

The South African Schools Debating Board invites all suitable candidates to apply for a position on the panel of selectors and trainers that will select the South African Schools Academy Debating Team 2013.

SA Academy will be held in Johannesburg from 6 – 10 July 2013, with selectors arriving the afternoon of Saturday the 6th of July and departing midday of Wednesday the 10th of July. Selectors will be housed with Gauteng-based selectors/debating union members.

SA Academy selectors are unpaid and will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and travel costs.

Selectors will be responsible for the following:

  • Selecting the SA Academy Team to attend AWSDC 2013
  • Giving extensive constructive feedback to trialists after each debate
  • Engaging in active coaching sessions with trialists (this may include giving a workshop if requested to do so)

Your application should comprise the following:

  • Your name and contact details
  • A brief CV indicating your past involvement in debating
  • A brief written motivation

The panel will be announced on 20th of June 2013. No late applications will be accepted.
The SASDB reserves the right to change any elements of this procedure should it see fit.

Call for adjudicator to accompany the South Africa A teams in Thailand

The two South Africa A teams are attending the Asian World Schools Debating Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand in August this year. The teams need to be accompanied by an adjudicator. The successful candidate will be expected to join the team coaches for the pre-tournament training camp, assist the coaches during training and at the tournament.

Requirements:

  • Available to travel between the 27th of July and the 8th of August.
  • A valid South African passport.
  • National level adjudication experience.

Covered:

The following expenses will be covered:

  • Flights
  • Accommodation
  • Tournament Registration

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following costs:

  • Any meals not covered by the tournament.
  • Spending money

Selection will take account of both adjudicator ability and ability to contribute to team preparation for the tournament.

Announcement of South Africa A teams

Following the announcement of the national team (Josh Broomberg, Dan Peter, Rachel Grace Gardiner and Nicole Dunn) we would like to announce two additional South African A teams.

These teams are made up of the remaining eight trialists. These eight speakers were very competitive during the trails process and combine to form two teams of exceptional quality.These two teams will represent as South Africa “A” teams. The goal being to broaden the international exposure of the top level debaters in this country.

Congratulations to all the speakers! Trials was of an incredibly high quality this year and all debaters should be proud of what they have accomplished.
