Call for SANSDC 2014 DCAs

Dear debating community,

In conjunction with the SASDB, I would like to invite experienced candidates to apply for a position on the 2014 SANSDC Chief Adjudication Panel. Successful candidates will be required to serve on the CAP at the NSDC from the 13th till the 18th of December.

I am looking to appoint a CAP of 4 people, with the possibility of increasing the number to five, depending on the quality of applications. Applications will be accepted from Tuesday, the 1st of July until Thursday the 31st of July. Successful candidates will be notified by Thursday the 7th of August.

Requirements and responsibilities
As part of the CAP this year, DCAs will be involved with adjudication training and policy, setting panels, tabbing, and dealing with adjudication complaints. Accepting a position on the CAP means that you are committing to taking part in email discussions about adjudication policy ahead of the tournament and will need to be able to access and use Google Drive regularly.

It is important to note that as a member of the CAP, you will also be involved in the motion-setting committee. However, unlike in previous years, the CAP will not actually be directly setting motions for this tournament. Instead, the CAP will be providing oversight to ensure that sufficient motions of a high enough standard are set for the tournament.

Finally, you must commit to attending the SANSDC 2014 from the 13th of December till the 18th of December 2014 in the Western Cape.

Application Process
The application must include ALL of the following:
1. A full debating CV including your name and contact details, as well as your experience in World Schools Style Debating only. Please separate your speaking, judging and organizational experience (including tabbing) into three separate sections. Two reputable debating references (include their names, email addresses and cellphone numbers) should also be included.
2. A brief letter of motivation for you application (no more than a page).
3. A short paragraph on what you believe adjudicator training should focus on at NSDC.
4. A list of three motions, with a brief explanation of why each is appropriate, for: the junior category, the senior category, and the senior Plate final.
If any of the above is missing the application will be deemed incomplete and no late applications will be accepted.
Please email all questions and applications to Tristan von Zahn at and forward this to any interested parties.

I look forward to receiving and considering your application.
Kind regards,
Tristan von Zahn
Chief Adjudicator

Announcement of NCA

The South African Schools Debating Board is pleased to welcome Tristan von Zahn to the NEC as our new chief adjudicator! Tristan will serve as CA for the board and for the National School Debating Championships held this December in the Western Cape. We are excited to work with him and we are sure he will be an excellent addition to our board.

We would also like to thank Paida Mangondo for his hard work as CA over the last two years. Paida has put in many hours of effort on the adjudication side of national debating and he will be missed!

Call for assistant junior coach

The South African Schools Debating Board invites all suitable candidates to apply for the position of assistant national Junior Team coach. One assistant coach position has been opened.

In a continued effort to develop the strength of South Africa’s debating pool, we will be taking a National Junior Team to an international debate tournament.
Given this structure, the responsibilities of the assistant coach will include:
  • Assist in training the trials squad. A training camp will be held from the 21st to 23rd March 2014.
  • Act as a national selector at junior trials. Trials will be over the June 16 long weekend on Saturday the 14th, Sunday the 15th and Monday the 16th.
  • Coach as well as accompany the SA Junior team on an international tour in 2014.
  • Assist in the training of the South African Junior team in advance of their 2014 Tournament.
Your application should comprise the following:
  1. Your name and contact details
  2. A brief CV indicating your past involvement in debating
  3. A brief written motivation
Please submit applications on or before the 28th February 2014. Successful candidates will be announced on the 7th of March 2014. The SASDB reserves the right to change any elements of this procedure should it see fit.
Please email all questions and applications to both”
 Phiwe Salukazana:

Appointments: National Shadow Coaches and Junior Coach

The SASDB is pleased to announce the appointment of Nicole Dunn and Saul Musker as the shadow coaches of the 2014 South African Schools Debating Team. They will assist the head coach in training the team, as well as developing their own coaching skills. We are also excited to announce that Phiwe Salukazana has been selected as the SA Junior Team head coach, newly formed this year.

We wish all of our coaching staff the best of luck with training and competition this year! We know they will do us proud.

Call for national shadow coach

This is a call for applicants interested in filling one of two shadow coach positions for the senior National Team of 2014. The role of shadow coach is distinct from the earlier advertised role of “assistant coach”. The shadow coach positions are reserved for less experienced coaches with the specific objective of improving their coaching skill set.
Shadow coaches will assist in the coaching of both the South African Team as well as the South Africa “A” teams before trials, helping to select the teams at trials and assist in preparing the teams for World Schools’ Debating Championships and other international tournaments.

Important Dates:
National Squad training Camp 21st – 23rd March 2014
National Trials 1st – 4th May 2014

Application process:
Interested applicants need to submit a debating specific CV detailing speaking, adjudicating and any coaching experience (if applicable). Candidates should also supply a letter of motivation which includes a brief explanation of coaching philosophy.

Appointment Procedure:
Applications need to be submitted to Luke Churchyard by the 3rd of February 2014:
All applicants will be reviewed by the SASDB Executive committee.
