The SASDB membership is made up of the official debating federations of each province, where such an organisation exists. The provincial debating structures are the source of the lifeblood of the SASDB: the speakers, the coaches, the teachers and the leagues. Provincial debating federations have a large degree of autonomy. The only requirements imposed upon them by the SASDB is that they report regularly to the SASDB, hold a provincial tournament each year, and adhere to the development quotas imposed for the national competition.

This section will tell you more about the debating structures in each member province of the SASDB. It also includes contact details for the provincial debating boards.

Please send an email to Kameel Premhid, the president of the SASDB (find his details on the ‘Contact Us’ page), outlining what sort of relationship you’d be interested in – and we can take it from there. 10. Hey

I am an experienced debator. My Union and I have tried helping out schools in the East London area by hosting a few workshops. A year ago we decided to try and use the official league to help out and offer our services in adjudication. I have tried to contact the email address provided on this site for the Eastern Cape (I think it was a Ms Pearce if I am not mistaken). I, unfortunately, have not received any response. Is there anyone else I can contact in accordance with this?

    1. Hi Bash,

I’m very sorry for the late reply, unfortunately we’ve been trying to deal with a backlog of comments from the transition period between the old and new NEC.

I hope you have gotten a response by now. If not, the Rhodes Debating Union might be of some help. As far as I’m aware, they’re heavily involved in schools debating in the EC. The email addresses I’ve found are or although they might be a bit dated.

Let me know if these avenues don’t work and I’ll try to get you another contact!

    2. Your information was sent to other schools, but we already have our own workshops which are basically free. Therefore if schools did not contact you ( which i did in the negative) then they too do not wish to attend

  11. Hey

I just want to ask if your board do work with students from colleges? If yes who do I commuicate with in Limpopo province

Hoping to hear from you soon

    1. Hi Dominic,

Yes, we do. In fact most of our coaches and NEC members are college students. They do not participate in debating themselves (you can do that through your university), but they do all the organisation, training and management.

The person in charge of debating in Limpopo is Tlou Mashitisho. Here are his details:
      Mobile: 072 910 9910

      Happy debating!

    1. Hi Onalenna,

Unfortunately, there aren’t many competitions in your area. Try emailing Michelle Groenewald ( for information on competitions that may exist.

The SASDB is planning on starting new debating development programs in North West this year. If you would like us to contact you when this initiative gets off the ground, please send us your contact details. Good luck!

      – Devi
